In Quantum electrodynamics (QED), theoretical predictions require inputting extremely precise values of, for instance, the fine structure constant $\alpha$, which can only be obtained from precision QED experiments. Among various measurement methods, laser spectroscopy is one of powerful ones. In this work, we discuss an effect that can occur in high resolution spectroscopy of atoms that fly almost perpendicular through a standing laser wave. The strong field gradient gives rise to a force acting on the atomic dipole which redistributes the atomic density. Since this redistribution depends on the laser detuning, line shape distortions and hence systematic frequency shifts are the result. We describe this effect in the quantum regime of the motion of the atoms and also discuss the classical limit. Contact Person 联系人 易俗
